A keychain is one of the smallest objects in the wardrobe and one of the most frequently handled. It is pulled from pockets, dropped onto hard surfaces, attached to bags and asked to secure something the owner cannot afford to lose.
Begin with the attachment
Split rings, spring clips, carabiners and hinged clasps solve different problems. A split ring is compact and secure for permanent carry. A clip is easier to move between bags but adds a mechanism that needs to remain reliable.
Open and close the attachment several times. It should move deliberately, return cleanly and avoid sharp edges.
Weight should support function
Heavy metal can feel substantial and become irritating in a pocket or damaging against softer leather. The correct weight depends on whether the object is carried with keys, attached to a bag or used primarily for identification.
A keychain should not pull zipper tabs, distort handles or create enough swinging mass to mark surrounding surfaces.
Leather reveals itself at the edge
Inspect cut edges, stitching, folds around hardware and painted finishes. Small leather goods experience concentrated stress because the same few millimetres bend repeatedly.
Leather should have enough body to resist curling. Edge paint should remain even at the fold and layered construction should show no early separation.
Metal finishing has to survive touch
Polished, brushed, plated and enamelled hardware all change with friction. Inspect moving joints and connecting rings closely. A rough casting seam or weak hinge is more important than the visible logo.
Used on a bag, scale becomes the decision
A small structured bag usually needs a compact accessory. A larger tote can carry more scale. Garnet, midnight, forest or deep plum can introduce one controlled colour note against a restrained base.
