Formal menswear works when every component agrees about the level of ceremony. The suit, shirt, shoe, tie, watch and cufflink do not need to be equally noticeable. They need to belong to the same room.
Confirm the dress code first
Business formal, cocktail, formal wedding attire, black tie and white tie are different systems. Venue, time and invitation language should be resolved before the wardrobe.
A dark business suit is not automatically black tie. A dinner jacket is not simply a more expensive suit. Correctness begins with category.
Fit controls the tailoring
Shoulders should sit cleanly, the jacket should close without strain, sleeves should reveal an intentional amount of shirt cuff and trousers should fall cleanly over the shoe. Balance matters from the side and back as much as from the front.
Alteration can matter more than label. Hem, sleeve, waist and trouser break should be resolved with the intended footwear.
The shirt frames the face and wrist
Collar shape, neck fit, cuff, fabric and opacity determine whether a shirt supports the tailoring. Fine cotton can be excellent, but thread count alone is not a reliable quality measure.
French cuffs create a natural role for cufflinks. Barrel cuffs can be equally correct when the dress code does not require the additional formality.
Footwear sets the floor of the outfit
Black leather Oxfords are a highly formal and versatile choice. Other refined closed shoes can be appropriate depending on the code. Leather soles are traditional; discreet rubber can add grip without automatically making a shoe casual.
Condition matters. Polished leather, clean edges and intact heels often contribute more to the final read than another accessory.
Edit the finishing details
Tie, pocket square, watch, cufflinks, belt or braces should support hierarchy. Exact matching is unnecessary. Avoid turning the outfit into a catalogue of visible prestige signals.
Search questions answered
What should a man wear to a formal event? Follow the stated dress code first, then resolve fit, shirt, footwear and accessories to the same level of ceremony.
How should a suit fit? Clean at the shoulder, comfortable when closed, balanced through the body and correctly hemmed at sleeve and trouser.
Do cufflinks need to match the watch? No. The metals and scale should relate, but exact matching is unnecessary.
