Cluster: Cashmere Care

Cashmere Does Not Fail All at Once

Gray cashmere sweater used by THE NOTICE to examine wear, recovery and seasonal storage.

Cashmere is easier to preserve when care is treated as a seasonal rhythm rather than a reaction to visible damage.

The fibre does not need constant intervention. It needs the right intervention at the right time: cleaning before storage, protection during warm months, gentle revival in autumn and rotation through winter.

Spring: clean before enclosure

Body oils, perfume, food residue and ordinary soil can attract moth activity and become harder to remove after months in storage. Follow the garment label. When hand washing is appropriate, use cool water, minimal agitation and a detergent designed for wool or delicate animal fibres.

Do not wring. Remove water gently and dry flat away from direct heat and sun until completely dry.

Summer: store flat and inspect periodically

Fold cashmere rather than leaving soft knitwear on narrow hangers that can stretch shoulders. Use clean drawers or breathable containers in stable living conditions rather than hot attics or damp basements.

Cedar can be part of a broader pest-control routine, but cleanliness and regular inspection matter more than scent alone. Keep cedar or other aromatic materials from direct contact with the knit unless appropriate.

Autumn: revive without aggression

Open stored pieces early enough to inspect for moth damage, odour or stains before they are needed. Light steaming may relax folds when permitted by the care instructions. Remove pills with a cashmere comb or appropriate tool using minimal pressure.

Pilling can occur naturally as shorter fibres work toward the surface. Excessive friction, poor fibre quality and over-wear can increase it.

Winter: rotate and let the fibres recover

Repeated consecutive wear increases friction and holds moisture in the knit. Rotate cashmere where possible, air it after wear and address small stains promptly.

Outerwear, seat belts, rough bags and jewellery can create concentrated abrasion. Understanding those contact points is often more useful than frequent washing.

Colour does not change the care rules

Cream, grey, black, midnight, forest or garnet cashmere all require the same basic restraint. Dark colours may disguise some surface change more easily, while pale pieces reveal stains sooner. Storage should remain clean, dry and protected regardless of shade.

Search questions answered

How should cashmere be stored? Clean, completely dry, folded, protected from pests and kept in a stable environment away from heat and damp.

How often should cashmere be washed? As needed and before long-term storage, following the care label. Excessive washing is unnecessary.

Should cashmere be hung? Soft knitwear is generally better folded for storage because hanging can distort shoulders and length.

Cashmere responds to rhythm. Clean it before rest, store it without pressure, revive it gently and give it time between wears.
