A work bag has to perform in more rooms than most accessories.
It may begin on public transport, sit beside tailoring, carry a laptop, disappear under a conference table and still look appropriate at dinner. That range is why obvious status is a poor substitute for engineering.
Capacity should match the actual day
Start with the largest non-negotiable object: laptop, tablet, document folder or nothing larger than a phone and wallet.
Too small creates overflow. Too large encourages weight. A work bag should be sized for the day actually lived rather than the office day imagined at purchase.
The opening matters as much as the dimensions
A narrow zip can make a spacious bag frustrating. Check whether the main compartment can be reached easily while the bag is partly filled.
Interior organisation should help rather than prescribe. One secure pocket and a clean main compartment can be more useful than many small sections.
Structure should survive movement
A bag does not need to be rigid to look composed. It needs enough architecture to hold its intended line and enough flexibility to move with the wearer.
Inspect the base, handle anchors, strap attachment, lining and corners. Smooth leather may look precise and show scratches quickly. Pebbled leather can disguise small marks. Suede softens the register but narrows weather tolerance.
Hardware should behave quietly
Zips should move cleanly. Feet should protect rather than decorate. Chains, buckles and rings should not add unnecessary weight or noise.
Colour should move across the workweek
Black, dark brown, graphite and midnight provide broad range. Oxblood adds warmth while remaining compatible with navy, charcoal and camel. The bag should not force the wardrobe to reorganise around it.

THE GRAY CRAB view
A good work bag does not announce ambition. It removes friction from the day and still looks correct when the meeting is over.
